چکیده

GRB 970508 is the second gamma-ray burst (GRB) for which an optical afterglow has been detected. It is the first GRB for which a distance scale has been determined: absorption and emission features in spectra of the optical afterglow place GRB 970508 at a redshift of z ≥ 0.835 (Metzger et al. 1997a, 1997b). The lack of a Lyman-α forest in these spectra further constrains this redshift to be less than z ∼ 2.3. I show that the spectrum of the optical afterglow of GRB 970508, once corrected for Galactic absorption, is inconsistent with the relativistic blast-wave model unless a second, redshifted source of extinction is introduced. This second source of extinction may be the yet unobserved host galaxy. I determine its redshift to be z = 1.09 −0.41, which is consistent with the observed redshift of z = 0.835. Redshifts greater than z = 1.40 are ruled out at the 3 σ confidence level. Subject headings: gamma-rays: bursts

The Host Galaxy of Grb 970508

We present late-time imaging and spectroscopic observations of the optical transient (OT) of gammaray burst (GRB) 970508. Imaging observations roughly 200 and 300 days after the burst provide unambiguous evidence for the flattening of the light-curve. The spectroscopic observations reveal two persistent features which we identify with [O II] 3727 Å and [Ne III] 3869 Å at a redshift of z = 0.835...

The Optical Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts

The first gamma-ray burst (GRB) for which an optical afterglow was observed was GRB 970228 [1, 2]. The first redshift for a GRB came from the optical afterglow of GRB 970508 [3, 4]. The inferred redshift for GRB 970508 was z = 0.835, which demonstrated that GRBs have cosmological origins and required that the bursts have isotropic equivalent energies of 10–10 erg, which was difficult to explain...

Unique data on BV RI brightness curves of the OT of GRB 970508 obtained with the 6-m telescope have been interpreted in the framework of the GRB-SN (supernovae) connection. The effect must be maximal in the Ic band as OT GRB 970228 [5]. The peak absolute (MB) magnitude of the suggested SN must be around -19.5 for the OT of GRB 970508. If all or the main part of long GRBs are associated with SNe...

Observations of GRB 970228 and GRB 970508, and the Neutron-Star Merger Model

We present the discovery observations for the optical counterpart of the γ-ray burster GRB 970508 and discuss its light curve in the context of the fireball model. We analyze the HST data for this object, and conclude that any underlying galaxy must be fainter than R = 25.5. We also present a detailed analysis of the HST images of GRB 970228 claimed to show a proper motion of the optical counte...
